Emission Permit
Since 2021, Bergen Airport has had a new emission permit that allows the discharge of glycol from aircraft deicing and formate from runway deicing. In addition, we are permitted to test equipment for fire trucks. Recipients must not be harmed. It is the airport's responsibility to monitor and document this. Reporting occurs annually based on land-based industry. The County Governor is the supervisory authority for the airport.
Environmental Monitoring
The airport conducts continuous environmental monitoring, and throughout the year, all major recipients around the airport are monitored with measurements and chemical analyses. The purpose is to monitor the condition of Langavatn, Lønning Stream, and Flesland River so that chemical usage during the winter season does not harm our recipients.
Raunefjord is monitored through participation in the City Fjord Survey.
Additionally, the airport wishes to conduct a biological survey that provides a status of the watercourses in accordance with the water regulations.
Results from the Monitoring Program
- The airport has continuous runoff of PFAS from previous firefighting training activities, and Avinor is taking a national approach for all airports, where the Environmental Directorate is the policy provider. Bergen Airport, along with several of Avinor's airports, has now been ordered to remove large amounts of the source. Execution is under detailed planning, May 2022.
- Biological examinations have assessed fish populations, bottom fauna, and plant populations. Reports show poor ecological status for the recipients according to the water directive.
