In June 2022, ESA approved that Avinor can finance a new airport in Mo i Rana with support from the Norwegian state and Rana municipality. Therefore, the following month, Avinor could award the first contracts for preparatory work. This work has now started. In the same month, the contract for the general contractor was awarded, and AF Gruppen was given the task of building the actual airport.
The construction work began on September 6, 2022. PK Strøm was awarded the contract for the construction roads, which have been completed, except for the paving of the new Granheiveien, which will be done in Q3 2024. The task of the utility network was awarded to Tore Løkke, who completed his contract on the project on October 3, 2023.
AF Gruppen started work on the project in May 2023 and worked mainly on the mass relocation of vegetation and stone, as well as blasting work, until the fall of 2024.
Avinor has been commissioned by the Ministry of Transport to establish a new airport in Mo i Rana. The airport aims to provide an improved and strengthened transportation service for the wider community in Helgeland and create a boost for the business sector in the region. Throughout the entire construction period, Avinor will work with both Rana municipality, Polarsirkelen lufthavnutvikling AS (PLU), and the rest of the local community to develop an efficient, modern, and future-oriented airport.
We are excited to build the new major airport in Helgeland!
The old airport will be operational until the new one is ready and begins operational activities. For a period, there will be trial operations at the new airport, and during this time, the airports will be coordinated. After that, the old airport will cease operations and be closed down.
In 2014, Avinor was tasked by the Ministry of Transport to prepare a preliminary project with an associated concession application. The preliminary project was completed in 2015. In 2020, the Ministry of Transport tasked Avinor with taking over the further process of constructing the airport. This included, among other things, negotiating an agreement on local financing, updating the 2015 preliminary project, and assessing relevant parts of Polarsirkelen Lufthavnutvikling AS (PLU)'s preparatory work, including tender documents and completed tender processes.
The Storting decided to build the airport in June 2021. Avinor then engaged Sweco as the contractor for the New Airport Mo i Rana.
The project has undergone an external quality assurance (KS2) under the scheme for quality assurance of major investment projects in the state.

The existing airport is surrounded by high mountains, which present several challenges for arrivals and departures. Therefore, it is not suitable for a longer runway and larger aircraft. The background for building a new airport is the desire to strengthen the transport services and business community in Helgeland through a longer runway, making it possible to offer direct routes to Oslo and Southern Europe.
