How do I get notified about explosions?

Our contractors have carried out well over 200 large and small blasts since the first one was triggered on Leap Day, February 29, 2024. The largest explosion produced over 65,000 cubic meters of rock, the smallest just a few cubic meters. If the wind direction is unfavorable with onshore winds from the south and southwest, the blasts can be heard very well over large parts of the Bodø peninsula.

We understand that this can be uncomfortable and frightening for both young and old residents of Bodø, but this work is absolutely necessary to carry out in order to build a new airport of this size. You can therefore prepare yourself and your family for upcoming blasts by signing up for our notification service.

The notification service is provided by Nabovarsling.no and you can find it here. The service is self-explanatory and completely free for you as a user.

The largest and most extensive blasting operations were carried out in 2024, and although the frequency with more weekly blasts will continue through 2025, the individual blasts will become smaller throughout the year. According to the plan, the last blast will be triggered during the fourth quarter of 2025.

Blasting at the construction site is generally carried out in the late afternoon and early evening.

    Facts and background
Avinor was tasked in 2017 by the Ministry of Transport to continue the work of planning the relocation of Bodø Airport. This was done with the intention of facilitating urban development by freeing up areas near the city center at the existing airport. In the chosen alternative, it is planned to move the airport approximately 900 meters southwest of the current runway. That means the distance from the city center increases, but Bodø Airport will still be close to the city.

    Societal Goals

    • Avinor, during the development and establishment of a new airport in Bodø, aims to facilitate the release of areas for Bodø municipality's need for urban development and contribute to strengthening the region's potential for continued growth.
    • The airport shall be a regional hub for the area and meet the market needs for flight routes, charters, and cargo in a way that contributes to value creation, business development, and settlement.

    Effect Goals

    New Bodø Airport shall have:

      • Capacity that is initially sufficient for 20 years into the future
      • Good passenger solutions
      • Weather availability of at least 99 percent
      • Efficient airport operations

    Results Goals

    Health, environment, and safety:
The project has a zero-vision regarding injuries and serious incidents to people, the environment, and materials.

    Cost:
The project aims to be completed at a cost lower than the management framework.

    Quality

    Climate and environment:
The project should result in reduced operational CO2 emissions from aviation in Bodø. This includes emissions from operations and transport to and from the airport, as well as from the operators. The project should also seek to minimize emissions from construction activities, as well as solutions and material choices.

    Certification:
The terminal building is planned to be certified according to BREEAM (Very Good).
