Travelling With Children
By taking a few simple measures, you can ensure a comfortable trip for both children and adults.
Prams
Prams are considered to be out of size baggage. To travel with prams you need to do as follows:
Prams are checked in at the counter like other baggage. Here you will receive a separate baggage sticker for the pram.
The pram must thereafter be brought to a separate check-in counter for special baggage, where you will receive a bag to protect the pram.
The baggage sticker must be affixed to the bag in a visible place.
NOTE! Collapsible prams may in some cases be brought along as hand baggage, however, this depends on the airline. Consult your airline well before departure.
Children’s food
The general rule is that it is not permitted to bring liquids on board. However, you are permitted to bring food and drink for your child for use during your trip.
Children’s food containers may contain more than 100 milliliters and they do not need to be packed in transparent sealable plastic bags – as the rules require for other liquids.
You may be asked to taste the contents at the security check (in order to prove it actually is children’s food). We recommend that you keep children’s food easily accessible in your hand baggage and display it without being asked when you pass through the security checkpoint.
Children travelling alone
Children can travel alone from the age of five. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 who are travelling alone are provided with a folder with travel information that they must carry visibly throughout the trip. The folder is issued by the airline at check-in.
If children who are travelling alone need to change planes, the airline will look after them.
One parent can accompany children travelling alone all the way to the aircraft on domestic flights. This requires an escort ID, which is issued by the check-in staff on presentation of identification. Ask for an escort ID when checking in for your child. On arrival, parents wait for children outside the baggage hall.
More information is available on the airlines’ websites (see links to the right).
Passports and identification
Persons below the age of 16 travelling with adults do not need to present separate ID cards on domestic flights. NOTE! Some airlines practice a 12 year age limit, consult your airline well before departure.
If you are a Norwegian citizen, you may travel without a passport within the 15 Schengen countries. It is still wise to bring your passport when travelling outside of the Nordic countries. For Norwegians, the passport is the only approved form of identification outside of the Nordic region.
If you are travelling outside of the Schengen area, you must make sure that children have their own passports or that they are included in your passport. This can be arranged by the police.
If you need a visa, children may also require one. In certain countries a separate application is required for children even though they are travelling with adults who have a visa.
